What is NFT?

Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) are cryptographic assets on a blockchain with unique identification codes and metadata that distinguish them from each other. In the case of images, video, and audio, only the link to the digital asset is written to the blockchain, which is usually stored in IPFS.

In addition to information about the asset, NFT metadata usually includes the creator's (author's) wallet, data about the smart-contract, sales history, instructions for marketplaces about the number of royalties transferred to the author, and much more.

In the case of generative art, if it is specified that it is stored on-chain (as in Art Blocks), all the code that generates the art is written to the blockchain. In most cases, the browser interprets this code, but other interpreters can also be used for this.

The creation of the NFT is called "minting." "Minting" refers to creating new NFTs on a blockchain, most commonly Ethereum. When you mint an NFT, you’re recording data that comprises a new NFT in a new block that’s then added to a blockchain.

Minting an NFT typically comes with fees. For NFT systems that use the Ethereum blockchain, this cost is paid in gas. Gas refers to the unit that measures the amount of computational effort required to execute specific operations on the Ethereum network.

Most of the NFT market is the game industry's play-to-earn such as [Axie Infinity] and in-game items, PFP (profile picture) projects such as Crypto Punks and Bored Apes Yacht Club. A small part is occupied by the art market.

What is Generative art

Generative art refers to art that has been created in whole or in part by an autonomous system. In the most common cases, it is a code that generates an image, some of whose parameters are predefined, and some are random within the range set by the artist. In the case of generative art, the art subject is the algorithm itself and the result of its execution (images, videos, interactive art).

In the case of generative art, the NFT is usually an algorithm that can produce a large number of images with sufficient variability while maintaining the concept and recognizability, limited to a certain number of copies, determined by a random set of characters (hash).

What is a smart contract?

Smart contracts are programs stored on a blockchain that run when predetermined conditions are met. They are typically used to automate an agreement's execution so that all participants can be immediately sure of the outcome without an intermediary’s involvement or time loss. They can also automate a workflow, triggering the next action when conditions are met.

In the case of NFT, smart contracts can be responsible for minting, auctions, post-purchase funds distribution, and more. Each platform has its own smart contracts.

Artistic guides

GT on ArtByCoders can only be written in html/css/javascript. Ultimately, GT are documents which can be interpreted by a web browser. When someone will collect your GT, it will create a unique web document derived from the one you provided. Don't worry, as an artist, the generation process is automated, and if you follow the guidelines it should be straightforward to implement a GT. However, you will need to know how to render graphics within a web document to use the platform.

Your project is stored

Your project will be stored on the IPFS network, and then stored on the Polygon blockchain. It ensures its immutability.
